Alphabet Loses Nearly $700 Billion in Market Value, AI Competitiveness Questioned
Alphabet (the parent company of Google) has faced continuous pressure on its stock price, with its market value shrinking by approximately $692 billion since reaching an all-time high in May. Concerns about its AI competitiveness have intensified. Over the past year, investors viewed Alphabet as one of the biggest winners in the AI wave, with its stock price rising over 150% as of May 13 compared to the previous 12 months, making it the best-performing stock in the S&P 500, significantly outpacing other tech companies. However, as the market reassesses Google's leading position in AI, Alphabet's upward momentum has begun to reverse. Investors are worried about the potential loss of the company's core AI talent and the possibility of losing its edge in the generative AI competition. Analysts believe that as AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to push forward with model and product innovations, Alphabet needs to demonstrate that its AI initiatives, such as Gemini, can translate into actual commercial growth to regain market confidence.
