Avalanche Discusses Lowering the Validator Reward Minimum from 10% to 7.5%
The Avalanche Foundation has unveiled an economic research agenda to modify the Avalanche (AVAX) validator reward structure. ACP-285 proposes to lower the primary network staking reward minimum from 10% to 7.5%, while the MaxConsumptionRate remains unchanged. This structure results in lower short-term staking rewards, while maintaining long-term staking rewards for 365 days. ACP-285 aims to reduce AVAX inflation and slow down the depletion rate of the security budget, indicating that annual inflation could decrease by 0.5 to 1 percentage points. Currently, this proposal has not been applied to the mainnet, and the Helicon upgrade was activated on the Fuji testnet on July 29. ACP-285 will be applied linearly over 90 days following the Helicon activation, with approximately 8.75% applied to staking that begins 45 days later. Avalanche's existing tokenomics features a structure where new issuance and fee burning are separated, with validator rewards being newly issued on the P-chain. Community reactions are mixed, with some positively assessing the risks associated with liquidity staking tokens and related strategies, while others express concerns about the reduction in short-term staking rewards. The next step is public discussion regarding Helicon and ACP-285, rather than application to the mainnet.
