Bitcoin ETFs: 2026 Flows Finally Return to Positive
Bitcoin ETFs have finally erased their losses. After being weighed down by $5.8 billion in net outflows in July 2026, these funds now show nearly $800 million in net inflows since the beginning of the year, according to data from SoSoValue. A true 180-degree turnaround. But before celebrating, funds and ETFs have massively sold Bitcoin, and it is individuals who have bought. What is happening?
In Brief
- Bitcoin ETFs have returned to positive territory for 2026.
- The rebound of Bitcoin ETFs coincides with Bitcoin's rise to $85,000.
- In the third quarter of 2026, funds and ETFs reduced their BTC positions, unlike individuals.
The $5.8 Billion Hole Finally Filled by Bitcoin ETFs
Let's go back to July 13, when Bitcoin ETFs showed a deficit of $5.8 billion for the year. But since then, the trend has reversed, and flows have climbed, climbed, and climbed until reaching nearly $800 million in net inflows today. Two factors contributed to this explosion:
- The price of Bitcoin: it rose from under $58,000 in early June to around $85,000 today. When the price goes up, flows follow... It's logical.
- Scott Bessent's announcement to increase bond buybacks. Nearly $4 billion of these inflows have come since this announcement.
A dynamic, one might say, more than normal, as more liquidity in the system logically ended up in Bitcoin. So nothing mysterious, just market mechanics.
The dynamics of Bitcoin ETF flows.
Six Days of Inflows in Bitcoin ETFs is Little
These Bitcoin ETFs have now recorded six consecutive days of inflows, even though the BTC rally has been above $85,000 since last Tuesday. Over these six days, $2.84 billion has come in. Let's say it's solid, but not exceptional. Two other six-day series exist in the records. One from February 22 to 29, 2024, with $2.35 billion, and another from November 6 to 13, 2024, with $4.73 billion.
Almost double the current performance, as you can see. And let's set the record straight for the entire year because these $800 million in 2026 flows remain tiny compared to the $35.2 billion amassed in 2024 and the $21.4 billion in 2025. We can then talk about a rebound, not a tidal wave.
What ETF Flows Don't Tell
Where it gets interesting is that while everyone celebrates the return of positive flows in Bitcoin ETFs, another figure that is less highlighted circulates. In the third quarter of 2026, individuals accumulated nearly 107,000 additional BTC, while during the same period, funds and ETFs reduced their positions by 39,000 BTC, governments by 11,000 BTC, and companies by 2,000 BTC.
Bitcoin accumulation by individuals in Q3 2026.
So in this specific quarter, it is not institutional vehicles that are driving the accumulation... It is indeed individuals. The narrative "Bitcoin ETFs are back" therefore deserves to be more nuanced. The net flows for the entire year of 2026 have returned to positive. Yes, but the dynamics of the quarter show institutions lightening their positions rather than reloading.
Add to this a second signal that Bitcoin's dominance in the total cryptocurrency market capitalization is falling, around 59%, and it has slipped significantly in recent days. Money is leaving BTC to take refuge in altcoins. Two trends that, when put together, tell a story more nuanced than a simple return to positive territory for ETFs.
What to Remember About Bitcoin ETFs Returning to the Green?
- Bitcoin ETFs have returned to +$800 million in net flows for 2026, after a low of -$5.8 billion in July.
- The rebound of Bitcoin towards $85,000 and Scott Bessent's announcement on bond buybacks explain most of the turnaround.
- Despite six consecutive days of inflows, the performance of BTC ETFs remains far from the two previous records.
- In the third quarter of 2026, funds and ETFs sold Bitcoin while individuals were buying massively.
The flows of Bitcoin ETFs are currently in the green, that is a fact. But who is really buying, and who is quietly selling? That is another story, and it cannot be read in a single chart. The coming days could certainly bring more clarity to this somewhat contradictory situation in the BTC market.
