Bitcoin's 17th Year Rekindles Old Technology Debates
As Bitcoin enters its 17th year, discussions about whether the network's long history is a strength or a weakness have resurfaced. Venture capitalist Jason Calacanis described Bitcoin as outdated technology, arguing that next-generation blockchains are more advanced. Calacanis noted that Bitcoin's simplicity is presented as an advantage, but it has fallen behind technically. Michael Saylor, Chairman of Strategy, highlighted Bitcoin's value of approximately $1.6 trillion, stating that it is positioned as digital capital. The maximum supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million, which enhances the network's predictability. Within the Bitcoin community, there is a debate about the reluctance to make significant changes to the protocol. Disagreements surrounding BIP-110 have raised the question of whether Bitcoin should be merely a monetary tool or a network capable of more transactions. Institutional adoption suggests that Bitcoin could increase its integration into the traditional banking system. At the center of the debate is the question of whether Bitcoin's monetary function will fade into the background over time.
