Brave Launches Brave Accounts with OPAQUE Protocol for Password Security
Brave has launched Brave Accounts, allowing users to utilize the newly introduced Email Aliases feature and future Brave services. Brave Accounts employ the OPAQUE encryption authentication protocol, enabling users to prove possession of their passwords to the server, while the server can also prove its legitimacy to the user. Throughout this process, passwords are never transmitted and remain solely on the user's device. Even if a database is compromised, attackers would need to obtain the server key and cannot crack passwords in bulk. OPAQUE does not prevent phishing attacks, so users still need to use strong passwords. The new Brave Sync will support pairing with Brave Accounts, eliminating the current QR code pairing process while continuing to offer an option for syncing without an account.
