Chinese AI Companies Earn Ten Times Less Than OpenAI and Anthropic
Chinese artificial intelligence developers generate about 10% of the revenues of American companies OpenAI and Anthropic. According to Rhodium Group, the projected annual revenue (ARR) of major Chinese AI companies is as follows: DeepSeek - $500 million, MiniMax - $800 million, Moonshot - $1 billion, and Z.ai - $1.8 billion. In comparison, OpenAI's ARR is $40 billion, while Anthropic's is $65 billion. Even when considering the revenues of ByteDance ($4 billion) and Alibaba ($2.4 billion), Chinese companies remain significantly behind. Rhodium also noted that the revenue estimates for Moonshot and DeepSeek appear excessive. Moonshot declined to comment on the estimates, calling them rumors, while DeepSeek did not respond to the inquiry. Z.ai expects its revenue to increase to $3 billion by the end of the year. Analysts point out that Chinese labs rely on open-source code and government funding, which covers over 60% of investments in chips and servers, creating risks for their development. Rhodium Group partner Logan Wright noted that the funding shortage will complicate the scaling of Chinese labs.
