Choosing the Right Network is Crucial When Converting USDT to Monero
For users looking to convert USDT to Monero, the first critical step is to accurately determine which blockchain network the USDT is on. Tether issues USDT on multiple networks, and each version only works on its own chain. Therefore, the network selected in the transaction form must match the network from which the USDT is sent.
Same Asset, Different Networks
The two versions users most frequently encounter are USDT on Tron and USDT on Ethereum. Although both represent the same value, they exist on different chains, and a token cannot be directly transferred from one network to another. The fact that wallet applications often display both versions simply as USDT is considered a major source of errors.
Address formats provide a fundamental checkpoint for network differentiation. Tron addresses typically start with the letter T, while Ethereum addresses begin with 0x. Ensuring that the network label in the user's wallet matches the network option on the transaction page helps prevent unnecessary additional transfers and costs.
The network to which USDT is sent must be the same as the network selected in the transaction form; otherwise, the transfer may not be processed automatically.
Difference Between TRC20 and ERC20
USDT on the Tron network uses the TRC20 standard. Transfers on this network operate through energy and bandwidth. If there are insufficient resources in the wallet, the transaction fee is covered by TRX. Therefore, to send Tron-based USDT, a certain amount of TRX must be held in the wallet.
On the Ethereum network, USDT is based on the ERC20 standard, and transfer fees are paid in ETH. Due to gas fees that vary according to network congestion, even if USDT is present on Ethereum, the transfer cannot be executed if there is no ETH in the wallet. While which network is more suitable depends on the user, the most practical approach is generally to use the network where USDT is already available.
Mini glossary: TRC20 is the token standard operating on the Tron network. ERC20 is known as the common token standard used on the Ethereum network; the two standards are not interchangeable.
| Network | Token Standard | Required Asset for Fees |
|---|---|---|
| Tron | TRC20 | TRX |
| Ethereum | ERC20 | ETH |
Incorrect Network Selection Can Lead to Additional Costs
One of the most common mistakes is depositing funds through a network that the transaction does not follow. Particularly, the use of addresses starting with 0x across different EVM networks can lead users to send USDT from another network to an address created for ERC20. In such cases, even if the assets reach the address, the transaction system may not automatically recognize it.
In these types of errors, the refund process can take time and incur additional recovery costs and network fees. In some cases, a return may not even be possible. Therefore, it is recommended to triple-check the network in the wallet, the network in the transaction form, and the network information next to the deposit address before sending.
Investments made through the wrong network do not complete automatically; the refund process can take time and incur additional fees.
Wallet Check is Crucial for XMR Delivery
While USDT transfers can be publicly tracked on the Tron and Ethereum networks, privacy is ensured on the receiving end with Monero. The Monero network does not openly display the sender, receiver, and amount information on the chain. Therefore, it is important for users aiming for privacy to receive XMR in a wallet they control rather than a platform account.
Using a new Monero sub-address helps separate payments from each other. Additionally, there is a 10-block lock period for newly received XMR. This means that there is approximately a 20-minute wait for the assets to be able to move again. If the payment does not appear immediately in the wallet, it may be necessary to wait for the synchronization process to complete.
