Cryptocurrency Industry Loses Over $1 Billion in First Half of 2026, Ethereum and Solana Suffer the Most
In the first half of 2026, the cryptocurrency industry lost over $1 billion, with the number of hacking incidents reaching a historic high. A report from the security platform Blockaid revealed that 212 security incidents were tracked within six months, with a single attack on KelpDAO resulting in a loss of $292 million. Ethereum and Solana were the networks with the largest amounts of stolen funds, losing approximately $332 million and $326 million, respectively. The report noted that the number of high-threshold attacks in the first half of 2026 was 3.4 times that of the entire year of 2025. Ethereum incidents were primarily driven by code vulnerabilities, with attack methods including bridge and smart contract vulnerabilities, unauthorized access to privileged accounts, and market manipulation. Solana's losses increased by about $127 million compared to 2025, with over 98% of the losses stemming from key leaks, mainly involving the Drift Protocol and Step Finance incidents.
