Developer Linked to North Korea Granted Access to ConsenSys Internal Systems
It has been confirmed that blockchain company ConsenSys allowed a software developer linked to North Korea to access its internal systems for a month. As a result, the company has temporarily halted product launches and initiated a comprehensive investigation. ConsenSys hired the developer, who operated under the alias 'Tyler Knapp,' through an introduction from an external partner, only to later discover that this individual was connected to North Korea. ConsenSys' General Counsel, Matt Kova, stated that the developer was never employed as a staff member but joined as a consultant. After recognizing the threat, access was immediately revoked, and the investigation found no evidence of asset or data leaks, malware distribution, or impacts on user safety and security. This incident highlights how North Korean hacking organizations attempt to secure developer access through fake job offers. Hackers are posing as legitimate hiring processes to gain access to internal systems and look for infiltration opportunities. ConsenSys plans to reassess its verification procedures for outsourced development and engineering work in the future.
