Electricity Exports Increased: Sales in August Surpassed Imports Nearly Twice
In August 2026, Ukraine exported nearly twice as much electricity as it imported. According to Energy Map, the export volume increased by 63.8% compared to July, reaching 380.9 thousand MWh, while imports rose by 5% to 184 thousand MWh.
This is reported by Dilo, citing a message from the analytical center DIXI Group.
Thus, Ukraine remained a net exporter of electricity for the second consecutive month.
At the beginning of August, the main factor affecting electricity consumption was temperature. Due to the heat and active use of air conditioners, the demand for electricity remained high.
In the first 10 days of the month, Ukraine imported 46% of the total electricity volume for August. The peak day was August 8, when imports reached 14.9 thousand MWh.
After August 11, the situation changed. A decrease in temperature and high generation from domestic solar power plants reduced the need for electricity purchases from abroad. At the same time, exports exceeded imports almost every day until the end of the month, except for August 15.
The largest difference between import and export volumes occurred from August 24 to 31. During this period, daily sales volumes of electricity abroad exceeded purchases by 10 to 13.5 times.
The increase in export capacity in the second half of August was associated with a rise in available generation and a decrease in domestic demand.
An additional resource for export was provided by the return of one of the nuclear power plant units to operation after scheduled repairs. At the same time, due to Russian shelling, the load on the energy system from certain large enterprises in the mining and metallurgical complex decreased.
Other sectors of the economy also consumed less electricity. In particular, Russian attacks on warehouse infrastructure, seaports, and other facilities led to a reduction in energy consumption.
In total, this created an additional resource that Ukraine could direct towards exports. At the end of August, including from the 24th to the 30th, the sale of electricity abroad was 12 times higher than its import.
The security situation in the energy system remained complex. In August, Russia carried out two massive shelling attacks, which resulted in power outages in certain regions.
At the same time, the needs of the energy system were met through internal generation and commercial imports. Measures to limit consumption were not applied during the month.
The largest amount of electricity purchased by Ukraine in August came from Hungary — 74.6 thousand MWh, or 40.6% of the total import volume.
Romania took the second position — 41.4 thousand MWh (22.5%), and Slovakia was third with 40.6 thousand MWh (22%). Poland supplied 26.9 thousand MWh (14.7%), and Moldova — 0.4 thousand MWh (0.2%).
Compared to July, supplies from Hungary, Moldova, and Poland increased by 7 to 46%. At the same time, imports from other directions decreased by 1 to 11%.
In annual terms, imports in August 2026 were significantly lower. For comparison, in August 2025, Ukraine purchased 264.2 thousand MWh of electricity — 43.6% more.
Electricity exports in August were conducted daily, with daily volumes exceeding imports for most of the month.
The largest buyer of Ukrainian electricity was Hungary — 173 thousand MWh, or 45.4% of total exports.
Ukraine exported 112.1 thousand MWh (29.4%) to Moldova, 71.4 thousand MWh (18.8%) to Romania. Another 21.4 thousand MWh (5.6%) went to Slovakia, and 3 thousand MWh (0.8%) to Poland.
Compared to July, exports increased in all directions — by 55 to 85%.
At the same time, in annual terms, the figure remained lower. The total export volume in August 2026 decreased by 15.4% compared to the same month in 2025, when Ukraine sold 450.1 thousand MWh of electricity abroad.
Recall that in July 2026, Ukraine significantly increased electricity exports while simultaneously reducing its import volumes. By the end of the month, external electricity supplies rose by 48% compared to June, reaching 232.5 thousand MWh.
