Global Food Prices Reach Highest Level Since 2022
Global food prices rose in August to their highest level since the end of 2022. The escalation of geopolitical tensions and extreme weather conditions are exacerbating concerns over supplies from key producing regions. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), prices for all major commodity groups increased in August. Sugar prices rose by 11.9%, while wheat prices increased by 2.6%, with wheat costs being 15% higher than a year ago. Experts note that supply issues, military actions in the Black Sea region, and weather conditions are impacting the markets. In Ukraine, farmers are facing difficulties exporting grain, and in Europe, crops have been affected by heatwaves, which may lead to increased food imports. The FAO has lowered its forecast for global grain production in 2026 to 2.98 billion tons, marking the largest reduction since 2018. Estimates for corn and rice production have also been revised downwards. The expected total grain harvest remains the second largest on record. The Bloomberg Index, which tracks prices for 10 major agricultural commodities, rose by more than 13% in August, marking the largest monthly increase since July 2012. Analysts noted that changes in global prices do not necessarily mean an immediate increase in food prices in stores.
