IMF Warns Dollar Stablecoins Could Accelerate Currency Crises

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that dollar stablecoins could facilitate access to foreign currency in economies with fixed exchange rate regimes, but they could also accelerate the flight from local currencies during currency crises. According to a study prepared by economist Brandon Joel Tan, stablecoins help individuals access dollars in situations where official foreign exchange channels are insufficient. However, the ability to monitor stablecoin prices in real-time can serve as a signal that may encourage the exit from local currency. The research emphasizes that stablecoins provide benefits in countries where access to dollars is restricted, but they could accelerate currency substitution during periods of stress. Regulatory authorities have warned that dollar stablecoins could increase the risk of currency substitution in developing economies and allow for circumvention of capital flow measures. The Financial Stability Board has called for close monitoring of the development of the stablecoin sector.
