Japan's Rate Hike Probability Reaches 82% in September, Market Awaits Central Bank Officials' Remarks
Officials from the Bank of Japan will have multiple opportunities to confirm or temper market expectations regarding a rate hike in September, with the current market estimating the probability at around 82%. Since the rate hike decision in July 2024 faced criticism, the central bank governor has emphasized the importance of strengthening communication with the market. The movement of the yen is a key factor in the central bank's signaling of policy intentions. Kento Minami, a senior economist at Daiwa Securities, stated that the central bank may not explicitly indicate a rate hike in September but could suggest the necessity of a hike by emphasizing the risks of rising inflation, which the market would interpret as an acknowledgment of a September rate increase. Conversely, if the central bank stresses uncertainty or the need to observe data, the market may interpret this as a signal to maintain rates in September.
