Saudi Arabia Faces Houthi Attacks, Trump Refuses Military Intervention
Saudi Arabia is facing a serious strategic dilemma, having been attacked from multiple directions by Iranian-backed armed forces over the past two weeks. Last week, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman requested Trump to take military action against the Houthi forces, but was refused. Recently, a Saudi oil tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the deaths of two crew members; the Houthis have expanded their operations towards the Red Sea, defeating the Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces. At the same time, Iranian-backed Iraqi militia launched drone attacks on key Saudi oil pipelines, forcing the closure of the pipeline and affecting Saudi Arabia's ability to export oil to the Red Sea, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. Former U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Michael Ratney stated that Saudi Arabia is currently very frustrated, and the situation has evolved into its worst-case scenario. Analysts believe that Trump is unwilling to open a new front for Saudi Arabia against the Houthis due to ongoing conflicts between the U.S. and Iran, as well as pressures on naval forces and ammunition reserves. Saudi Arabia may turn to diplomatic avenues, seeking new arrangements with Iran and other Gulf countries, possibly even with China's mediation.
