Senator Tillis Submits Motion for Reconsideration of CLARITY Act
Senator Tom Tillis, a Republican, has submitted a motion for reconsideration regarding the closure of discussions on the CLARITY Act, a comprehensive bill on virtual assets in the United States. This leaves room for a quick re-vote. The closure of discussions requires more than 60 votes in favor to end the Senate filibuster and move to a vote in the full chamber. The motion for reconsideration is a procedural measure that allows the bill to be voted on again. According to the Senate webpage on the 16th, Senator Tillis cast a vote against the closure of discussions on the CLARITY Act. He originally supported it but appears to have voted against it strategically. The closure of discussions was defeated with 49 votes in favor and 50 against. If the motion for reconsideration is approved, a rapid re-vote on the existing closure can take place. Past instances have shown that re-votes can occur within hours after the closure of discussions. Without the motion for reconsideration, it would require waiting at least two legislative days to go through the closure process from the beginning. However, experts predict that it will take time for the approval of the reconsideration due to the fact that the votes in favor of the closure did not exceed a majority.
