Telegram Provides User Data to U.S. Authorities, Court Documents Reveal

By: www.404media.co|10/17/2026 07:02:48

On October 17, independent media outlets Court Watch and 404 Media reported that documents released by a U.S. federal court show that Telegram provided specific user privacy data to U.S. authorities after receiving valid legal requests. The documents include a response from Telegram dated September 2026, which contains the user's phone number, user ID, account display name, and the IP address and timestamp of the last login. Telegram stated that this provision was "voluntary," but it does not acknowledge U.S. jurisdiction and did not provide any chat content or contact information. Since September 2024, Telegram has adjusted its policy to allow the disclosure of IP addresses and phone numbers when judicial authorities confirm that users are suspected of criminal activities violating its terms of service. Throughout 2024, Telegram has responded to approximately 900 U.S. law enforcement requests involving 2,253 users.
