China Launches First Container Route Through the Arctic
Chinese company Sealegend Shipping has launched the first regular container route to Europe through the Arctic via the Northern Sea Route. The Russian corporation 'Rosatom' has issued permits for the passage of seven vessels. The voyages will be weekly, with the route running from Ningbo in China to Felixstowe in the UK, named the 'Ice Silk Road'. Eight voyages are scheduled from mid-August to the end of October. The first container ship, Dubai Tower, will depart on August 12 and arrive in the UK on September 5. The new route allows for the avoidance of hazardous areas such as the Red Sea and is becoming promising due to the melting of Arctic ice, although Russian regulations and limited infrastructure remain challenges. Previously, cargo from China to Europe was delivered via the Suez Canal in 40 days or around the Cape of Good Hope, which took even longer. Rail transport takes about 25 days but falls short of maritime delivery in terms of volume and cost.
