Three Tourists Rescued on Mount Shasta After Using AI for Planning
Three tourists from California were rescued during their ascent of Mount Shasta after planning their trip using Google Gemini. The AI recommended that they bring significantly less food and water than the group actually needed. The tourists lost their way, spent the night in the mountains, and were evacuated by rescuers. After their rescue, the men reported that they used Gemini to obtain information about the route and necessary supplies. Rescuers called the excessive reliance on AI a critical mistake. The planned eight-hour hike turned into a multi-day journey. The tourists set up camp at an elevation of about 8,400 feet and started towards the summit at 3:00 AM, reaching it only at 7:00 PM, which was seven hours later than the recommended turnaround time. They lost the trail and ended up in Mud Creek Canyon, where one of the participants injured his knee. The next morning, they were found by U.S. Forest Service staff, and volunteers from the Siskiyou County Search and Rescue joined the operation. All group members and rescuers safely returned to the trailhead. The sheriff's office urged travelers to check information with local rangers and use multiple navigation methods, rather than relying solely on AI.
