US tax deadline tests Bitcoin liquidity amid Fed meeting
The US estimated-tax deadline on Tuesday will shift cash to the Treasury, potentially impacting Bitcoin liquidity if dollar funding tightens. This deadline coincides with the Federal Reserve's meeting on September 15-16, raising concerns about risk-taking in the market. The IRS has set September 15, 2026, as the deadline for estimated-tax payments, aligning with the Fed meeting's opening day. Bank reserves, which support payments and funding, increased by 96.779 billion dollars to approximately 2.991 trillion dollars as of September 9, while the Treasury General Account decreased by 84.6 billion dollars to 883.3 billion dollars. Tax payments will transfer balances from commercial banks' reserves to the Treasury, reducing reserves and potentially affecting short-term financing. Historical data from September 2019 indicates that similar tax dates can lead to spikes in repo rates due to temporary reserve declines. However, the Treasury anticipates smaller bill auction sizes in September, which may offset cash absorption. The Fed plans for seasonal reserve demand and has tools like the Standing Repo Facility to manage funding pressure. For Bitcoin investors, the impact hinges on financing conditions and risk appetite, with research indicating that stablecoin market capitalization declines following US monetary tightening. The outcome of this tax deadline will depend on whether funding spreads widen relative to Fed rates.
