Apple and Google Strengthen Talent in Payment and Web3 Strategies, Stablecoin Knowledge Required for Hiring
Two Major Tech Companies Recruit Specialists in Payment and Blockchain
Apple and Google have posted job openings for senior positions requiring knowledge of stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and blockchain technology.
Apple's focus is on consumer payment, while Google's is on Web3 business for institutional investors in the Asia-Pacific region, indicating that expertise in digital assets is becoming a hiring requirement for major technology companies.
Apple is looking for a Financial Product Strategy Lead for Apple Pay. The position is based in New York or Cupertino, California, and is part of the wallet, payment, and commerce division that handles products like Apple Card and Apple Cash. Responsibilities include long-term strategies for existing products as well as exploring new product structures, partnerships, and growth opportunities. Notably, the job listing specifies an understanding of "stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and blockchain technology" as a desirable qualification.
Additionally, experience in P2P payments and credit cards, as well as knowledge of payment systems including those outside the U.S., is required. The job listing does not mention plans for Apple to issue its own stablecoin or add cryptocurrency features to Apple Pay. However, it does indicate that there is a growing expectation for candidates to understand these technologies for future financial product strategies.
Google Seeks Technical Leader for Web3 Business in Hong Kong
On the other hand, Google Cloud is recruiting an industry chief architect for Web3 based in Hong Kong. This position involves providing technical advice to clients related to digital assets in the Asia-Pacific region.
Candidates will work with blockchain foundations, exchanges for institutional investors, digital asset custodians, and financial institutions that tokenize physical assets. Applicants are expected to have a broad knowledge of stablecoin payments, tokenized deposits, custody, blockchain validators, zero-knowledge proofs, and smart contracts.
Furthermore, security and compliance in accordance with regulations from the HKMA (Hong Kong Monetary Authority) and the Securities and Futures Commission will also be part of the job responsibilities.
Google has already indicated plans for a layer-1 network called "Google Cloud Universal Ledger" aimed at wholesale payments and asset tokenization, and is also listed as a supporting company for the stablecoin project Open USD (OUSD) alongside Coinbase, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, and Shopify.
This recruitment does not directly imply the launch of new cryptocurrency services by either Apple or Google. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that knowledge of stablecoins and blockchain is being sought for senior talent in both consumer payment and institutional investor cloud sectors. This suggests that expertise in digital assets is increasingly being specified as a hiring requirement for senior positions in major technology companies.
