Economy: Elon Musk Promises AI and Robots Will More Than Double Global GDP in 10 Years
More than double in ten years. Elon Musk promises that artificial intelligence and robotics will more than double the global economy over the next decade. The prophecy, posted on X on September 9, was shared by the account Watcher.Guru before making its rounds in the crypto sphere, and it deserves us to pull out the calculator.
The head of Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX has never hidden his taste for exponential curves: he was already betting on AI to boost the economy when the crypto bull run showed signs of weakness. However, the implied growth rate in his latest announcement has no precedent on a global scale.
Key Points
- Elon Musk claims that AI and robotics will more than double the global economy in ten years, which equates to about 7.2% annual compounded growth without interruption.
- Academic estimates are much lower: about 1% additional GDP over ten years according to Daron Acemoglu, 7% according to Goldman Sachs.
- The constraint is electrical: the IEA expects 945 TWh of consumption for data centers by 2030, up from 415 TWh in 2024.
- Bitcoin miners monetize their connections with Microsoft and AWS, while stablecoins establish themselves as payment rails for AI agents.
Elon Musk Bets on AI and Robotics to Double the Global Economy
Musk makes this statement while presenting Optimus, his humanoid robot, which he describes as the most important product ever designed by Tesla.
The goal of this research? A machine capable of working continuously breaks the limit of available human hours. Consequently, GDP ceases to be bounded by demographics. Hence the idea that AI and robotics could more than double the global economy.
Let’s not be naive, however. The man has a direct interest in this narrative taking hold since the compensation plan approved by Tesla shareholders at the end of 2025 conditions his highest tranches on a capitalization of $8.5 trillion and one million Optimus robots delivered. The valuation of the manufacturer now relies less on cars sold than on the credibility of a robotized economy.
7.2% Growth Per Year: The Arithmetic of the Promise
However, it is time to do our own research and equip ourselves with our calculator. The global GDP weighs about $115 trillion. Doubling it would mean adding, in ten years, the equivalent of all the wealth produced today by the entire planet. To achieve this, it would require maintaining about 7.2% annual compounded growth, without a single year of pause.
However, the historical average growth hovers around 3% per year. Only China, the absolute reference in terms of industrial catch-up, has maintained a comparable pace, nearly 10% for three decades, but for a single country in a catch-up phase. No economy has ever pulled the entire planet at such a pace over a complete decade.
Academic works also land significantly lower. Daron Acemoglu, an economist at MIT and 2024 Nobel laureate, estimates the contribution of generative AI to be about 1% of additional cumulative GDP over ten years. Goldman Sachs, more optimistic, retains 7% additional global GDP over the same period. Even revised downwards, Musk's bet remains a pure and simple doubling, or about fourteen times Wall Street's most optimistic estimate.
Moreover, the International Energy Agency estimates the electricity consumption of data centers at 415 TWh in 2024 and expects around 945 TWh by 2030, equivalent to Japan's annual consumption. Musk himself warned that the chip shortage would give way to a shortage of transformers, and then electricity.
Crypto: Bitcoin Miners Already Paying the Price of AI
This electrical constraint has reshaped the mining landscape. IREN signed a computing contract worth about $9.7 billion with Microsoft at the end of 2025. Cipher Mining entered into an agreement estimated at $5.5 billion with Amazon Web Services. TeraWulf has converted part of its farms in New York State into hosting capacity for AI. Bitcoin miners held precisely what AI players urgently sought: already authorized and powered high-voltage connections.
An economy populated by autonomous agents also requires suitable payment rails. Coinbase launched the x402 protocol in 2025, allowing software to settle an API call in stablecoin without human intervention. Google followed with AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol), designed for AI agents to transact with each other, with a dedicated extension for stablecoin settlements. Machines negotiating in milliseconds do not accommodate bank opening hours well.
Musk did not link his prophecy to cryptocurrencies. Tesla still holds 11,509 BTC inherited from its 2021 purchase, and SpaceX reportedly holds about 8,000. In February 2021, the billionaire wrote on X: The real battle is between fiat currency and crypto. All things considered, I support the latter.
Robotized production mechanically drives down the cost of goods while the money supply continues to expand. In this scenario, savings migrate towards assets with constrained supply, and the cap of 21 million bitcoins remains the only parameter that cannot be renegotiated.
The first verifiable milestone plays out in factories and on the electrical grid: one million Optimus units delivered to unlock the upper tiers of Tesla's plan, and megawatts actually connected on the data center side. Bitcoin miners are already monetizing these connections through multi-year contracts worth billions of dollars. The doubling of global GDP, on the other hand, will be verified in national accounts a decade later.
