US Charges Vietnamese National Trung Nguyen Van in $53.3M Crypto Scam
U.S. prosecutors have charged Trung Nguyen Van, a 37-year-old Vietnamese national, with money laundering linked to alleged cryptocurrency "pig butchering" schemes. Wallets controlled by Van received approximately 53.3 million dollars connected to fraud targeting U.S. victims. One victim reportedly transferred about 16 million dollars after being misled by a fake crypto investment platform named Triangle. The victim was unable to withdraw the investment after developing trust with the scammers. Investigators traced the funds to other suspicious wallets and additional U.S. victims with similar experiences. The complaint alleges that Van's wallets received around 53.3 million dollars in assets from wire-fraud schemes and transferred roughly 53.2 million dollars onward. The Department of Justice states that the FBI investigated the case. Van is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the charges are allegations not yet proven in court. The scale of the fraud networks is highlighted by the significant amounts involved, with a single victim losing around 16 million dollars.
