AI Reidentification Risks Prompt Reevaluation of Zcash Privacy Features
Grayscale has suggested that the risk of reidentification of financial data due to the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) may lead to a reevaluation of the privacy features of Zcash (ZEC). The concern is that as public blockchain transaction records are combined with external data, the likelihood of linking addresses to actual identities increases.
Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, described AI as the "third wave" that is raising public interest in financial privacy in a report titled "Zcash and the Privacy Imperative," published on August 31. He noted that the risk of connecting actual identities could increase when public blockchain transactions are combined with external information.
Bitcoin.com News reported that Pandl stated, "For users who value privacy, this could be an 'essential feature.'" Grayscale's argument is positioned at the intersection of the public ledger structure and AI analytical capabilities, rather than focusing solely on Zcash's price outlook.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) explains that AI creates new reidentification risks. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) also included in a March 2026 report insights from expert panels indicating that AI can reidentify anonymized information by combining different datasets. Although these documents do not evaluate Zcash itself, they resonate with the concerns raised by Grayscale.
Zcash supports both transparent and shielded addresses. The official Zcash documentation explains that shielded transactions do not disclose the sender, receiver, or transaction amount on the blockchain. Through optional disclosure features, transaction information can be shown to necessary parties in a limited manner.
However, shielded transactions do not automatically guarantee complete privacy. Discussions in the Zcash community forum regarding the "Zero-indexer" pointed out that during the communication process between wallets and indexers, IP addresses and Zcash amounts could be linked. This means that even if information on the chain is obscured, network metadata and usage patterns remain separate risks.
Institutional accessibility has also been part of the discussion. Grayscale announced on August 25 that the Zcash ETF (ZCSH) began trading on the NYSE Arca. An 8-K document submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) previously indicated that trading under the ZCSH ticker was expected to start around August 25.
Our publication previously reported that the Zcash ETF recorded a trading volume of $14.8 million (approximately 2.03 billion KRW) on its first day of listing. The closing price at that time was recorded at $63.10, down 1.54% from the previous session.
This listing follows Grayscale's transition of the existing Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded product structure, broadening access through securities accounts. This means that investors can gain exposure to ZEC without directly holding Zcash, altering the approach for both institutional and individual investors.
Community reactions have been mixed. The Zcash community forum's "The Zcash Daily" on August 31 reported cautious optimism regarding the ZCSH listing, but also raised questions about whether a transparent custody structure undermines the shield-centric philosophy. While institutional products broaden accessibility, there is a debate about whether they conflict with Zcash's privacy identity.
Counterarguments have also been raised. BTC Times reported that Samson Mow criticized Grayscale's Zcash privacy framework, asserting that Bitcoin can also be used privately and that Zcash's anonymous pool is small. The same report also addressed debates surrounding fees and product structures.
The proportion of shielded supply is also difficult to fix at a single figure. ZecStats reported that as of September 1 at 8:12 AM KST, 4.86 million ZEC, or 28.7% of the total supply, was in shielded status. Community posts and some trackers expressed similar figures around the 28% or approximately 30% range during the same period.
The discrepancy in figures arises from differences in the denominator and reference time. Depending on whether the entire issued supply is used as a basis or calculations are made based on specific address groups and tracking methods, the proportion of shielded supply can vary. Therefore, the trend of increasing shielded supply and the ratio at a specific point in time should be read separately.
For domestic investors, the issue is closer to structure than price. Privacy coins have been treated as sensitive asset classes in exchange listings and regulatory reviews, and the institutionalization of products broadens accessibility while reigniting debates over custody and regulatory compliance. The Zcash case illustrates a trend where discussions of financial privacy in the AI era simultaneously pressure token design and investment product structures.
Grayscale's recent article is more about reorganizing the long-term narrative surrounding privacy assets than causing immediate market shocks. Whether AI leads to an actual increase in Zcash usage needs to be confirmed with separate data.
