Bitcoin: What convinces Americans to buy BTC?
The end of a reign for a slogan. For years, the industry has sold Bitcoin to individuals with the same formula, that of digital gold, a rare and incorruptible store of value. However, the average American has never bought a gold bar in their life. The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI), a pro-Bitcoin think tank based in Washington, wanted to know which arguments resonated with voters and which fell flat. The verdict contradicts almost everything that podcasts say.
Key points of this article:
- The Bitcoin Policy Institute's survey revealed that the slogan "digital gold" for Bitcoin did not convince Americans.
- Messages focused on personal control were the most appealing to voters, while word-of-mouth surpassed traditional media communication.
The survey, published on August 24 in collaboration with the polling institute Cygnal and the Neighborhood Bitcoin association, took place in three phases between March and June. First, a national survey of 1,516 registered voters aged 18 to 64. Then, eight focus groups comprising about 80 non-holders in Columbus (Ohio) and Nashville (Tennessee). Finally, a message validation phase with 1,000 voters from May 29 to June 2, with a margin of error of 3.1 points.
Awareness is no longer the issue. 94% of respondents have heard of Bitcoin, and 61% want to learn more about how to hold it. However, 55% do not know if they can buy it from a major American broker. The public is divided into four groups, with the largest (32%) being the "undecided curious," followed by the "ideological rejecters" (about 30%), the "disconnected in financial difficulty" (20%), and the "active believers" (18%).
As for digital gold, the formula mainly caused confusion in the focus groups. During the national test, it ended up near the bottom of the 19 messages presented to respondents. Years of storytelling for that.
What convinces is control. The highest-rated messages all revolve around personal mastery, such as "you decide how much you invest" or "you can track your account activity yourself." Just behind are past performance, security, accessibility, and ease of use. The message "Bitcoin is the currency of freedom, the only one that no bank, government, or intermediary can freeze, dilute, or confiscate from you" also ranks among the top nine, categorized by Cygnal in the same family of control.
The ground was ripe. 74% of surveyed voters have little or no trust in the dollar to retain its value in the coming years. In other words, the problem that Bitcoin claims to solve is already felt by three out of four Americans. It remained to articulate it without jargon. "People need to understand what Bitcoin is and how it could improve their lives," summarizes Sam Lyman, BPI's research director. Once concrete concerns were addressed one by one, the share of respondents "not interested at all" dropped from 39% to 32%, while those "very or extremely interested" rose from 19% to 24%. Five points gained by changing the words, not the product.
The other lesson concerns the messenger rather than the message. Who do Americans trust to inform them about Bitcoin? Their personal financial advisor (33%), a retirement or financial planning specialist (25%), and a friend who already holds it (23%). Media figures, business leaders, and public officials come far behind. This should make those who think a viral thread converts crowds reconsider.
| Most trusted source of information on Bitcoin | Share of respondents |
|---|---|
| Personal financial advisor | 33% |
| Retirement/financial planning specialist | 25% |
| Friend or close one holding Bitcoin | 23% |
| Media figures, leaders, elected officials | Far behind |

"Bitcoin is as much a social movement as it is a technology," comments Troy Cross, senior researcher at BPI. Word-of-mouth trumps top-down communication. Alli Shaw, founder of Neighborhood Bitcoin, notes that "once these concerns were addressed directly, interest in Bitcoin surged." The neighborhood advisor weighs more than a billionaire on a platter.
The Cleveland Fed reaches the same conclusion in a recent study. Its researchers showed a panel of households Bitcoin's performance over the past year, which was 14.3%, and the declared likelihood of holding it increased by about 23% relatively, from a starting rate of 11%. Expectations of returns weigh more than age or income in the decision to buy. The narrative of digital gold was written for ETF managers, and it fulfilled its mission. For the 32% of undecided curious, the next wave of Bitcoin adoption will go through different vocabulary and other voices.
