Dollar-Yen Exchange Rate Hits 159.43 Yen Amid Yen Carry Trade Rebuilding
After the intervention by Japanese authorities in the foreign exchange market, the dollar-yen exchange rate has risen to 159.43 yen, approaching the 160 yen mark again. Some traders are showing a tendency to reset their short positions on the yen during its rebounds. According to Blockbit, arbitrageurs are taking the yen's rebound as a selling opportunity, and if the yen's strength does not persist, the profits from the interest rate differential could absorb the exchange rate risk. As of August 4, hedge funds' short positions on the yen have halved, but some institutions are starting to use the yen as a funding currency again. Japanese authorities defended the yen by injecting billions of dollars at the end of July, with daily intervention estimated to be around 53 billion dollars. The market is influenced by the US-Japan interest rate differential and Japan's fiscal burden on the dollar-yen exchange rate, with the possibility of a Bank of Japan interest rate hike also drawing attention. Blockbit reported that some traders mentioned the possibility of the dollar-yen exchange rate testing 162 yen again. For Korean investors, it is important to note that yen carry trades may be linked to the liquidity of risk assets.
