FutureBit Tests Fruit Fly Brain for Bitcoin Mining
FutureBit has tested a simulated fruit fly brain to perform Bitcoin mining calculations in a web browser. The HashFly demonstration utilizes 2,914 neural pathways from a digital wiring diagram of a fruit fly's brain. The company aims to simulate all neurons in the dataset using SHA-256 and plans to publish its findings. If scaled to real organic neurons, it could achieve approximately 1 watt per terahash, ten times the efficiency of the best silicon 3nm ASICs. A mining system using living neurons could perform one trillion calculations per second while consuming about one watt of electricity. However, the experiment runs on conventional hardware and lacks the hash rate to compete with current Bitcoin miners. Bitcoin miners use SHA-256 calculations to add transaction blocks, with hash rate measuring attempts per second. HashFly operates at a fraction of Bitcoin's mining difficulty, while FutureBit's Apollo III ASIC miner reaches 18 terahashes per second. Another project, FlyMiner, uses a digital map of 139,255 fruit fly neurons to control a standard Bitcoin mining program, achieving speeds of up to 700,000 attempts per second. These fruit fly projects are part of a series of unconventional Bitcoin mining experiments.
