Increase in Preference for Stablecoins in AI Payments, Bitcoin Drops to 20%
Analysis shows that the preference for stablecoins has surpassed that of Bitcoin (BTC) in the payment market where AI agents purchase goods and services. While Bitcoin still maintains its dominance as a long-term store of value, the proportion of AI models choosing it as a means of everyday payment has decreased from 36% in March to 20% in September. According to a report by BlackRock and a survey by the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI), the percentage of AI models selecting stablecoins as a payment method increased from 53% in March to 77% in September. BlackRock analyzed that the spread of AI could increase the demand for digital assets, and stablecoins are likely to lead the transactional use in the agent economy. In AI payment infrastructure, stablecoin-based protocols are also dominant, with 402index.io reporting that Bitcoin L402 accounts for 0.4% while x402 accounts for 98%. The BPI survey indicated that the proportion of AI payments choosing fiat currency as the accounting unit was 41.4%, while Bitcoin was at 13.8%. Development of Bitcoin payment technology is also underway, with Lightning Labs releasing the alpha version of 'WaveRings', which allows AI agents to implement Bitcoin payments.
