SDE ep 42: Diego Gutiérrez Zaldívar analyzes AI attacks in the financial system
In episode 42 of Separating Money and State, Diego Gutiérrez Zaldívar, co-founder and CEO of RootstockLabs, discusses with Iván Gómez the AI-driven attacks in the financial ecosystem. Gutiérrez Zaldívar points out that AI is uncovering vulnerabilities that have been dormant for years, leading to a transition towards hybrid systems that combine permissioned segments and peer-to-peer. He emphasizes that the wave of attacks is temporary and that the software that survives will be more robust. Tropykus, a lending protocol from Rootstock, was taken offline as a precaution. He anticipates that the transition will take about two years and acknowledges that the attacks are causing a de facto centralization. RootstockLabs maintains offensive and defensive security teams. He proposes a consumption-based billing model to curb large-scale attacks. The hack of Boltz was operational, not technological, and the PowPeg between Bitcoin and Rootstock, active since 2018, has never been hacked. The TVL of Rootstock fell from $280 million in October 2025 to less than $70 million, attributed to the drop in Bitcoin's price. Money on Chain has operated without hacks for six or seven years. RootstockLabs is developing an institutional interface to mitigate risks.
