Stablecoin Supply Increases to $303 Billion, Payment Volume Rises to $527 Billion
In August 2026, the supply of stablecoins increased to $303 billion. From January to August this year, the payment volume rose from $401 billion to $527 billion, marking an increase of 42% to 63% compared to the same period last year. According to a report by blockchain data platform Alium, the stablecoin supply in August increased by 6% year-on-year, with Tether and Circle accounting for 85% of the total supply. The amount held by exchanges was recorded at $89 billion, while the amount held by DeFi protocols was $26 billion. The share of payments received by businesses was between 58% and 64%, with B2B transactions making up the largest portion. The growth rate of cross-border stablecoin payments is seven times faster than that of traditional fiat currency payment networks. Payments related to business operations totaled $56 billion for service costs, $43 billion for salaries, $28 billion for supplier payments, and $19 billion for retail purchases. The scale of B2B settlements ranged from $137 billion to $153 billion. Domestic payments accounted for 61%, followed by Thailand at $10.8 billion, Turkey at $7.8 billion, Indonesia at $6.3 billion, and Mexico at $6.1 billion. The total transfer volume reached $85 trillion from January to August, but the actual economic activity size decreased to $4 trillion. Transactions accounted for the largest share at 69%, while value storage and payments each represented up to 13%.
