US Advances Negotiations for Iraq-Syria Oil Pipeline to Weaken Iranian Influence

The United States is advancing negotiations for an oil pipeline that will bypass the Strait of Hormuz, transporting oil from Iraq to Syria in order to reduce Iran's influence over global energy supplies. Thomas Barak, the U.S. special envoy to Syria and Iraq, has convened officials and businesses from both countries, including Chevron, to discuss the revival of a long-dormant oil pipeline. The talks are focused on the reconstruction of the Kirkuk-Banias pipeline, which has been out of operation for over twenty years. U.S. State Department officials confirmed that the U.S. government supports the restoration of the oil pipeline between Iraq and Syria to broaden trade routes, and it is expected that American companies will play a significant role in the construction. Trump stated during a meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister at the White House that a "massive" new oil partnership will be announced this week or next week.
