EBA Calls for Rules on Crypto Lending and Borrowing
The European banking watchdog EBA is advocating for stricter rules on the lending and borrowing of crypto. This stems from the uncertainty regarding user protection in the event of provider bankruptcies. Lent crypto is not covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee, meaning that if a provider goes bankrupt, it may be difficult to recover your crypto. When lending crypto, a user makes their coins available to a platform, which can then lend them out for a fee. Unlike savings at banks, which are protected up to 100,000 euros per person per bank, this protection does not apply to crypto. The interest rate does not indicate the safety of the investment. The EBA advises the European Commission to regulate crypto loans, including platforms that provide access to DeFi services. The exact protection for users has yet to be established.
