The novel unfolds in a speculative science fiction setting, depicting a world reliant on cryptography and decentralized governance, focusing on the ideological conflicts between societies such as Veridia and the Arctic Empire. It incorporates elements like zero-knowledge proofs, quadratic voting, and privacy technologies, reflecting Vitalik's concerns about mechanism design and digital sovereignty. The work is published under the GPL v3 license, allowing adaptations into films, animations, and other derivative works, but requiring the open-sourcing of related production pipelines, including AI prompts, scripts, and other non-generic materials. Vitalik stated that all text was written by him, with AI assistance only used for spelling and grammar checks, consistency verification, and web formatting, and noted "Snowmoon was written with love."
